Ruth and Tom
Valentines Day is tomorrow here is a flashback to one of the sweetest love affairs I have ever witnessed......my Grandparents.....Tom and Ruth Mason. In High School "little Ruthie" was friends with Tommy's younger sister Vi. Vi brought home shy "little Ruthie" to stay at their home until the quarantine was lifted on her house (imagine that?). Tommy was quite taken with my Grandma and after she was allowed to go back to her home they spent their high school years courting ........they fell in love, got married , had three children ( the youngest was my Mom). They had an amazing journey together........(I can't watch The Notebook without thinking of them.) Married just a few months shy of 70 years .....they took their vows seriously......always held hands, loved to square dance, shared bowls of ice cream every night before watching Johnny Carson together (they never really care for Jay Leno....."he just wasn't Johnny"), they wouldn't go to bed angry. Tommy could always make "his best girl" Ruthie laugh....(the hard laugh that she would cover her mouth)...........Ruth put up with all of his new inventions and 9 different hair pieces. Alone they were very special people and together they made each other whole......they passed away six weeks apart from each other. I know my Grandpa is leading the choir up in Heaven and Grandma is proudly watching her handsome Tommy.
I miss you , love you and thank you!

I feel so lucky to have known both sets of my grandparents- you've inspired me to post pictures of them! Happy Valentine's Day!
How special! What a beautiful write-up on your grandparents. I loved it. Thanks for sharing. (I laughed at the hairpiece thingy. Cute).
So cute! So inspiring. Thanks
So sweet Dana, I love this post :) I dont know if my grandparents story would be as sweet..it includes a bar fight. :)
Thank you for sharing, Dana. I truly love to hear stories like this. How wonderful that these two were your parents and that you were able to witness such love first-hand. Happy Valentine's Day!
I can't imagine being with someone more than 70 years! How special for them, and for you to witness! Imagine how different things might be if most people today could sustain a love for that length of time.

Wow, 70 years! That is so sweet!! Such a cute picture! I have a similar picture of my grandparents just like that! They just celebrated 60 years in October.
Dana, this was such a special tribute to my Mom and Dad. You did it very well. I have to admit, they really did have a love that you don't see every day.
On top of it, they had good health up until the last months.
Thank you again for celebrating them.
Love you,
MOM
PLUS, YOU HAVE THE SAME SWEETNESS AND SMILE OF GRANDMA MASON IN THEIR WEDDING PICTURE..........I MIGHT ADD THAT YOU ADDED SO MUCH TO THEIR LATER YEARS, BY BEING THERE FOR THEM. YOU WERE THEIR SUNSHINE..........REMEMBER THE TIME YOU CAME TO THEIR DOOR, AND GRANDPA WAS STREAKING FROM THE KITCHEN TO THE BEDROOM. DIDN'T YOU SAY HE KEPT THE VIAGRA IN THE KITCHEN CABINET....HEE HEE MOM
I try not to think about the streaking and "Viagra" Mom....:)
What a precious story.... a true Valentine love story. Thank you for sharing it with us.
I would love to get to meet you. I hope that we can arrange that sometime soon. I know that you will be just as sweet in real life as you are on your blog.
Have a great week. Love, Lura
